London marine painter, probably father of W. C. Knell. Most of his subjects are views on the English coast, he also painted the French, Belgian & Duth coasts. In 1847 his “Destruction of Toulon” won 2nd prize in Westminster Hall Competition. He also painted “The Landing of the Prince Regent at Dover “ & “The Review of the Fleet at Spithead” for Queen Victoria. Examples in NG Edinburgh, Derby & York Art Galleries.
