Babbicombe, Devon
This beautiful mid-19th-century tinted Victorian lithograph offers an exceptional, highly detailed topographical view of Babbacombe Bay near Torquay along the South Devon coast. The composition expertly captures the rugged, pristine beauty of the early “English Riviera” before major modern development took place. In the foreground, a sandy beach populated by walking figures gives way to a detailed shoreline of dark, scattered boulders and low-flying gulls. The sweeping crescent of calm coastal waters is active with maritime life, featuring a prominent gaff-rigged schooner, smaller sailing vessels, and a rowed tender. Framing the bay are the dramatic, steep limestone and Devonian marble cliffs of Babbacombe Downs, while distinct rocky sea stacks rise sharply from the sea on the far-left horizon. Nestled into the heavily wooded hillside overlooking the sea are picturesque early Victorian villas and coastal cottages, showcasing the charm of this historic Devonshire landmark.
The fine craftsmanship of this print is attributed directly to Newman & Co. (48 Watling St., London), who executed the lithography. Newman & Co. were among the most prestigious, prolific, and highly celebrated topographical printmakers of the 19th century, renowned for their exquisite, finely detailed panoramic views of British towns and coastal resorts. This particular work was published locally at Croydon’s Royal Library & Reading Rooms, located directly opposite the Royal Hotel in Torquay. The authentic, historical publication lines remain clearly printed in the lower margins, attributing the work to Croydon’s Royal Library on the left and Newman & Co. on the right. Created circa 1840–1860, this original tinted lithograph features delicate, fine hand-colored accents that bring the historic Devon landscape beautifully to life.
