View of the ancient fortifications at Baden, canton of Argau (Stadtturm and Stein Castle)
This scarce lithograph with hand colour features three primary historic structures that define the defensive layout of old Baden. On the left side of the composition stands the prominent medieval Stadtturm (City Tower). This tall, stone gatehouse is characterized by its distinct corner turrets and a high, sharply pointed defensive spire. Stretching out from the base of the gate tower are the ancient Ring Walls. These stone fortifications descend across the terraced terrain, historically serving to seal off the town’s upper residential quarters. Overlooking the entire scene from the crest of the steep, rocky hill on the right are the ruins of Ruine Stein (Stein Castle). The print captures the weathered perimeter walls and the fractured, roofless remnants of its medieval watchtower silhouetted against the sky.
