He was born in Durham. A landscape painter who was encouraged to become an artist by his family. Having learnt all he could from the one drawing master, Mr Harle, in Durham, he moved to London in about 1804. He first exhibited at the RA in 1807 & in 1808 he published a print of Durham, which paid for a long trip to Scotland. In 1813 he became a member of the OWS & was its President in 1819-20. He also visited the South coast, North Wales, the Lakes & Ireland, where the Lakes of Killarney became his favourite painting spot. He also collaborated with R. Hills, who provided the figures & livestock.
