A pupil of Edward Opie, Dobson entered the RA Schools in 1836 & thereafter taught at the Government School of Design. He was Headmaster at the Birmingham School from 1843-1845, when he went to Italy. He then spent several years in Germany, where he came under the influence of the Nazarenes. He was elected ARA & RA in 1860 & & 1871 and Associate & Member of the OWS in 1870 & 1875.
