By renowned British marine artist Samuel Owen (1768–1857), “Fishermen Preparing Boats” is a rare, intimate oil on panel work. Drawing on his background as a Royal Navy sailor, Owen combines technical precision with atmospheric light to masterfully capture coastal life. It’s exceptional detail in rigging and structure reflects a fusion of British naval history, Romantic-era emotionalism, and 17th-century Dutch maritime art influences. As a trained sailor and official ship’s draughtsman for the East India Company, Owen brought rigid, firsthand accuracy to the structural details of the vessel, while incorporating dramatic lighting inspired by contemporaries like J.M.W. Turner.
