An example of  late-Victorian maritime painting showcasing masterful manipulation of light and atmosphere in oil on canvas board. Influenced by James McNeill Whistler, American-born Hunt (1855–1922) combined academic training with Impressionist techniques to create a poignant, historically significant view of London’s industrial waterways, comparable to works in the National Maritime Museum. It’s particular significance is Hunt’s ability to transform a gritty, industrial waterway into a scene of pure, poetic beauty. The painting elevates a commercial landscape by capturing the fleeting, transitional qualities of nature  alongside human labour.
