Arthur Hayward (1889-1960)
St. Ives Harbour, Cornwall
This is an exceptional early-to-mid 20th-century oil on board, capturing the essence of the Cornish art movement. Trained at the Slade and mentored by Stanhope Forbes, Hayward utilized confident and structural brushwork to render the harbour with atmospheric depth brilliantly capturing the region’s famous luminosity, using an expertly balanced palette where the warm, sun-drenched stone of the harbour walls and cottages contrasts beautifully with the cool, shimmering blues and turquoises of the tidal water. The composition guides the viewer’s eye through a sophisticated network of shapes—using the strong, geometric diagonals of the stone piers and moored fishing boats to anchor the scene and create an immense sense of spatial depth. His handling of paint elevates the canvas further; the fluid, confident brushwork and rich, textured impasto do not merely describe the scene but actively mimic the gentle rise and fall of the tide and the weathered surfaces of the Cornish coast. The painting captures a fleeting moment of daily maritime tranquility that transcends simple landscape painting to embody the nostalgic, artistic spirit of the St Ives colony.
