A prominent and successful etcher, painter and illustrator, Alfred William Strutt was born in Taranaki, New Zealand in 1856, the son of the artist William Strutt. He painted a variety of subjects including animals, genre, portraits and sporting scenes and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. He studied under his father, and at the South Kensington School of Art. He accompanied King Edward VII on a hunting trip to Scandinavia.
