Carlton Alfred Smith RI (1853-1946)

A genre painter in oil & watercolour, CA Smith was the son of a steel engraver & was educated in France. He studied at the Slade, & began his career as a lithographer before taking up painting full time. He exhibited from 1879, when he was elected to the Society of British Artists. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1889 & retired as an Honorary Member in 1939. Examples can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection & elsewhere.
