He was born at Middleton, near Manchester, in 1859. His father was a photographer and art dealer. He initially studied at Oldham School of Art under William Stott RBA, but when it closed down he transferred to Manchester School of Art and eventually at the Académie Julian in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880 on a regular basis and also showed at the Paris Salon. In 1886 he became a founder member of the New English Art Club.
