George Smith RSA (1870-1934)

He was born in Mid Calder, Midlothian, & died in Edinburgh. He painted landscapes and animal subjects in oil, especially scenes involving working horses. Educated at George Watsons College, he studied art at Board of Manufacturers School, Edinburgh, and in Antwerp under Verlat. His paintings had charm, capturing the spirit of the heavy horses as they worked on farms and under dappled sunlight in woodlands. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy , the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, the Aberdeen Artists Society, and also at the Liverpool Galleries.
