He was a Hull marine painter, he is also known as John Word of Hull for this reason. Son of a master mariner, he apprenticed as a house & ship painter.
He was influenced by William Anderson, who visited Hull, he painted ship portraits & shipping scenes, mostly in the Humber. He also visited the Arctic where he painted whaling ships & published illustrated books of ships.
