He was the father of the landscape artist Sir Herbert Hughes-Stainton. He mainly painted still-lifes & was a pupil of both George Lance & William Henry Hunt.
He lived in London & Brighton, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1866-1901, British Intitution, Suffolk Street, Grosvenor Gallery & elsewhere.
His major work was a set of five large bird pictures for the hall of Lord Calthorpe’s house in Grosvenor Square. A work by him is in the Hull Museum.
