He was a landscape & rustic genre painter, eldest son of John Linnell. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1851-91. He visited Italy, & painted some Italian genre scenes. He didn’t marry & lived near his father’s house at Redhill, Surrey. Works by him are in Sheffield, Manchester & Salford Art Galleries.
