Arthur Friedenson (1872-1955)
On the Frome, Dorset
“On the Frome, Dorset” by Arthur Friedenson is an atmospheric landscape showcasing the artist’s mastery of light and impressionistic technique. Friedenson was a key figure in the early 20th-century British art scene, initially gaining recognition as part of the influential Northern impressionist Staithes Group. Alongside contemporaries like Laura and Harold Knight, he rejected rigid academic establishment traditions to paint directly from nature (en plein air). After studying in Paris and Antwerp, his technical merit was cemented when the Tate Gallery purchased his work under the prestigious Chantrey Bequest in 1907. This authentic piece reflects Friedenson’s transitional move to Dorset around 1910, where his style evolved into a gentler, poetic lyricism. The painting offers a serene example of early 20th-century British impressionism, capturing the soft light of the Purbeck landscape.
